Tobías 1

1Tobías, de la tribu y ciudad de Neftalí, situada en la Galilea superior, sobre Naasón, detrás del camino que va hacia el Occidente, teniendo a la izquierda la ciudad de Sefet, Tobit was from the tribe and city of Naphtali (which is in the upper parts of Galilee above Asher, after the way, which leads to the west, that has on its left the city of Sephet).2fue llevado cautivo en tiempo de Salmanasar, rey de los asirios pero a pesar de hallarse en cautiverio no abandonó la senda de la verdad, Although he had been taken captive in the days of Shalmaneser, the king of the Assyrians, even in such a situation as captivity, he did not desert the way of truth.3de suerte que de cuanto tenía, repartía todos los días a los hermanos de su nación, cautivos como él mismo. So then, every day, all that he was able to obtain, he bestowed on his fellow captive brothers, who were from his kindred.4Aunque siendo el más joven de todos los de la tribu de Neftalí, no había nada pueril en sus acciones; And, when he was among the youngest of any in the tribe of Naphtali, he showed not so much as any childish behavior in his work.5de manera que cuando todos iban a los becerros de oro que había hecho Jeroboam, rey de Israel, solo él huía la compañía de todos los demás; And then, when all went to the golden calves which Jeroboam, king of Israel, had made, he alone fled from the company of them all.6y se iba a Jerusalén al Templo del Señor, donde adoraba al Señor Dios de Israel, ofreciendo fielmente todas sus primicias y sus diezmos. Yet he continued on to Jerusalem, to the temple of the Lord, and there he adored the Lord God of Israel, offering faithfully all his first-fruits and his tithes.7Cada tercer año repartía a los prosélitos y a los forasteros todo el diezmo. So then, in the third year, he administered all his tithes to new converts and to new arrivals.8Estas y otras cosas semejantes, prescritas por la Ley de Dios, observaba desde jovencito. These and similar such things, even as a boy, he observed according to the law of God.9Hombre ya, se casó con una mujer de su tribu, llamada Ana, de la cual tuvo un hijo, a quien puso su nombre, Truly, when he had become a man, he received as wife Anna of his own tribe, and he conceived a son by her, to whom he assigned his own name.10y le enseñó desde la niñez a temer a Dios, y a guardarse de todo pecado. From his infancy, he taught him to fear God and to abstain from all sin.11Por eso, cuando fue llevado cautivo con su mujer e hijo y toda su tribu a la ciudad de Nínive, Therefore, when, during the captivity, he had arrived with his wife and son at the city of Nineveh, with all his tribe,12aunque todos comían de los manjares de los gentiles, Tobías guardó pura su alma, sin contaminarse jamás con sus viandas. (even though they all ate from the foods of the Gentiles,) he guarded his soul and never was contaminated with their foods.13Porque se acordaba del Señor con todo su corazón, Dios le hizo grato a los ojos del rey Salmanasar; And because he was mindful of the Lord with his whole heart, God gave him favor in the sight of Shalmaneser the king.14el cual le dio permiso para ir adonde quisiese, y libertad de hacer cuanto le gustase. And he gave him the power to go wherever he would want, having the freedom to do whatever he wished.15Iba, pues, a visitar a todos los que estaban en cautiverio, y les daba consejos saludables. Therefore, he continued on to all who were in captivity, and he gave them helpful advice.16Llegado que hubo a Rages, ciudad de los medos, con diez talentos de plata, procedentes de las remuneraciones que había recibido del rey, y But when he had arrived at Rages, a city of the Medes, he had ten talents of silver, from that which he had been given in honor by the king.17viendo en necesidad entre la mucha gente de su nación a Gabelo, de su misma tribu, le prestó dicha suma de dinero contra un recibo firmado de su mano. And when, in the midst of the great tumult of his kindred, he saw the destitution of Gabael, who was from his tribe, he loaned him, under a written agreement, the aforementioned weight of silver.18Al cabo de mucho tiempo, murió el rey Salmanasar, y reinó en su lugar su hijo Senaquerib, que tenía gran odio contra los hijos de Israel. In truth, after a long time, Shalmaneser the king died, while Sennacherib his son reigned in his place, and he held a hatred for the sons of Israel.19Visitaba entonces Tobías cada día a los de su parentela, los consolaba; y repartía a cada uno, según podía, una porción de sus bienes. Every day, Tobit traveled through all his own people, and he consoled them, and he distributed to each one as much as he could from his resources.20Sustentaba a los hambrientos, vestía a los desnudos, y mostraba gran celo en dar sepultura a los que habían fallecido, o habían sido matados. He nourished the hungry, and he supplied clothes to the naked, and he showed concern for the burial of the dead and of the slain.21Cuando el rey Senaquerib, luego que volvió huyendo de Judea a causa de la plaga con que Dios le había castigado por sus blasfemias, mataba en su furor a muchos de los hijos de Israel, Tobías sepultaba sus cadáveres. And then, when king Sennacherib had returned from Judea, fleeing the scourge which God had caused all around him because of his blasphemy, and, being angry, he was slaughtering many from the sons of Israel, Tobit buried their bodies.22Lo que habiendo llegado a noticia del rey, mandó quitarle la vida y le quitó todos sus bienes. And when it was reported to the king, he ordered him to be slain, and he took away all his belongings.23Mas Tobías huyó con su hijo y su mujer, y despojado de todo se escondió, porque tenía muchos amigos. In truth, Tobit, fleeing with nothing but his son and his wife, was able to remain hidden because many loved him.24Cuarenta y cinco días después asesinaron al rey sus propios hijos. In truth, after forty-five days, the king was slain by his own sons,25Entonces Tobías volvió a su casa, y le fueron restituidos todos sus bienes. and Tobit was able to return to his house, and all his resources were restored to him.
