Sabiduría 12
1¡Oh, cuan benigno y suave es, oh Señor, tu espíritu en todas las cosas! O how good and gracious, Lord, is your spirit in all things!2De aquí es que a los que andan perdidos Tú los castigas poco a poco; y los amonestas por las faltas que cometen, y les hablas, para que, dejada la malicia, crean en Ti, oh Señor. Therefore, those who wander afield, you correct, and, as to those who sin, you counsel them and admonish them, so that, having abandoned malice, they may believe in you, O Lord.3Porque Tú miraste con horror a los antiguos moradores de tu tierra santa; For those ancient inhabitants of your holy land, who you abhorred,4pues hacían obras detestables a tus ojos con hechicerías y sacrificios impíos, because they were doing works hateful to you, through unjust medicines and sacrifices,5matando sin piedad a sus propios hijos, y comiendo las entrañas humanas, y bebiendo la sangre en medio de tu sagrada tierra. and the merciless murderers of their own sons, and the eaters of human entrails, and the devourers of blood apart from your community sacrament,6A estos padres, procreadores de aquellas criaturas abandonadas, los quisiste hacer perecer por medio de nuestros padres; and the sellers performing the ceremonies of helpless souls, you willed to destroy by the hands of our parents,7a fin de que la tierra, de Ti la más amada de todas, recibiese una digna colonia de hijos de Dios. so that they might worthily secure the sojourn of the children of God, in the land which is most beloved by you.8Mas aun a estos, por ser hombres, les tuviste compasión, y les enviaste avispas, a manera de batidores de tu ejército, para que los exterminasen poco a poco. Yet, so that you were lenient even to these men, you sent wasps, forerunners of your army, so that you might destroy them little by little,9No porque no pudieses someter, a mano armada, los impíos a los justos, o exterminarlos de una vez por medio de bestias feroces, o con una severa palabra; not because you were unable to subdue the impious under the just by war or by cruel beasts, or with a harsh word to exterminate them at once,10sino que castigándolos poco a poco, dabas lugar a la penitencia; bien que no ignorabas cuan malvada era su casta, y connatural su malicia, y que no se mudarían jamás sus ideas. but, in judging by degrees, you were giving them a place of repentance, not unaware that their nation is wicked, and their malice is inherent, and that their thinking could never be changed.11Pues venían de una raza maldita desde el principio; y sin que fuese por temer Tú a nadie, les dabas tregua en sus pecados. For this offspring was accursed from the beginning. Neither did you, fearing anyone, give favor to their sins.12Porque quién te dirá a Ti: ¿Por qué has hecho eso? ¿O quién se opondrá a tus juicios? ¿O quién se presentará ante Ti para defender a hombres malvados? ¿O quién te hará cargos por haber exterminado las naciones que Tú creaste? For who will say to you, “What have you done?” Or who will stand against your judgment? Or who will come before you as a defender of unfair men? Or who will accuse you, if the nations perish, which you have made?13Porque no hay otro Dios sino Tú; que de todas las cosas tienes cuidado, para demostrar que no hay injusticia en tus juicios. For neither is there any other God but you, who has care of all, to whom you would show that you did not give judgment unjustly.14No hay rey ni príncipe delante de Ti que pueda pedirte cuenta de aquellos que Tú has hecho perecer. Neither will king or tyrant inquire before you about those whom you destroyed.15Siendo como eres justo, dispones todas las cosas justamente; y crees ajeno de tu poder el condenar a aquel que no merece ser castigado. Therefore, since you are just, you order all things justly, considering it foreign to your virtue to condemn him who does not deserve to be punished.16Pues tu poder es el principio de la justicia; y por lo mismo que eres el Señor de todas las cosas, eres con todos indulgente. For your power is the beginning of justice, and, because you are Lord of all, you make yourself to be lenient to all.17Muestras, empero, tu poder, cuando no te creen soberanamente poderoso, y confundes la audacia de aquellos que no te reconocen. For you reveal power to those who do not believe you to be perfect in power, and you expose the arrogance of those who do not know you.18Pero como Tú eres el soberano Señor, juzgas sin pasión, y nos gobiernas con moderación suma; teniendo siempre en tu mano el usar del poder cuando quisieres. Yet, you are the master of power, since you judge with tranquility, and since you administer us with great reverence; for it is close to you to be used whenever you will.19Por esta tu conducta has enseñado a tu pueblo que el justo debe también ser humano, y has dado a tus hijos buenas esperanzas, puesto que cuando los juzgas por sus pecados, dejas lugar a la penitencia. But you have taught your people, through such works, that they must be just and humane, and you have made your sons to be of good hope, because in judging you provide a place for repentance from sins.20Pues si a los enemigos de tus siervos, y reos de muerte, los castigaste con tanto miramiento, dándoles tiempo y comodidad, para que se arrepintiesen de su malicia; For even if the enemies of your servants were deserving of death, you afflicted them with great attentiveness, providing a time and a place whereby they would be able to be changed from malice;21¿con cuánto cuidado juzgarás a tus hijos, a cuyos padres hiciste grandes promesas con juramentos y pactos? with what diligence, then, have you judged your sons, whose parents you have given oaths and covenants in good faith!22Así cuando a nosotros nos das alguna corrección, a nuestros enemigos los castigas de mil maneras; para que reflexionando consideremos tu bondad, y cuando nos hagas experimentar tu justicia, esperemos en tu misericordia. Therefore, while you give us discipline, you give our enemies a multiplicity of scourges, so that in judging we may think on your goodness, and when we are judged, we may hope for mercy.23Por la misma razón a esos otros, que vivieron como insensatos e injustos, les hiciste sufrir horribles tormentos por medio de aquellas cosas que adoraban. Therefore, also to these, who have lived their life irrationally and unjustly, through these things that they worshiped, you gave the greatest torments.24Así es que anduvieron largo tiempo extraviados por la senda del error, creyendo dioses a las creaturas más viles entre los animales, y viviendo como niños, sin ningún juicio. And, indeed, they wandered for a long time in the way of error, valuing those things as gods, which are worthless even among animals, living in foolish irrational behavior.25Por lo mismo les diste un castigo, a manera de escarnio, como a muchachos sin seso. Because of this, you have given a judgment in derision, as if from foolish children.26Mas los que no se corrigieron con escarnios y reprensiones, vinieron a experimentar un castigo digno de Dios. But those who have not been corrected by mockery and chiding, have experienced a judgment worthy of God.27Porque irritados de lo que padecían, y viéndose atormentados por las mismas cosas que creían dioses, y que ellas eran su ruina, reconocieron ser el verdadero Dios Aquel a quien en otro tiempo negaban conocer. Por lo cual descargó al cabo sobre ellos la condenación final. For among those who were indignant at their sufferings, which came through those things that they reputed to be gods, when they saw that they would be destroyed by these same things, those who formerly refused knowledge of him, now acknowledged the true God, and, because of this, the end of their condemnation came upon them.
