1A la verdad, soy también yo mortal, semejante a los demás, y del linaje de aquel que el primero fue formado de la tierra. En el vientre de la madre fui modelado en carne; Certainly, I myself am also a mortal man, like everyone, and the offspring of this earth, which was made beforehand; and in my mother’s womb I was fashioned with care,2en el espacio de diez meses fui formado de sangre cuajada, y de la semilla de un hombre, concurriendo lo apacible del sueño. within the time of ten months, made of blood, from the seed of man and the delight of sleeping together.3Y luego que nací, respiré el común aire, y caí sobre la misma tierra que todos; y mi primera voz, como la de todos, fue de llanto. And when I was born, I drew in the common air, and in similar fashion, I fell upon the earth, and the first voice I uttered, like everyone, was crying.4Fui criado entre pañales, y con grandes cuidados. I was nursed in swaddling clothes and with great care.5Porque no ha tenido otra manera de nacer que esta, ninguno de los reyes. For none of the kings had any other beginning of birth.6Una misma, pues, es para todos la entrada a la vida, y semejante es la salida. Therefore, there is only one entrance for everyone into life, and the same in leaving.7Por esto deseé yo la inteligencia, y me fue concedida; rogué y vino sobre mí el espíritu de sabiduría. Because of this, I chose, and understanding was given to me; and I prayed, and the spirit of wisdom came to me;8La preferí a los reinos y tronos, y en su comparación tuve por nada las riquezas; and I placed her before kingdoms and thrones, and I considered riches nothing in comparison with her.9ni parangoné con ella las piedras preciosas; porque todo el oro, respecto de ella, no es más que una menuda arena, y a su vista la plata será tenida por lodo. Neither did I compare to her a precious stone, for all gold in comparison with her is like a little sand, and silver, in view of her, will be valued as if dirt.10La amé más que la salud y la hermosura; y propuse tenerla por luz, porque su resplandor es inextinguible. I loved her above health and beauty, and I placed having her before light, for her light is unfailing.11Me vinieron, juntamente con ella, todos los bienes, e innumerables riquezas por medio de ella. Yet all good things came to me together with her, and innumerable honors by her hand;12Me gozaba en todas las cosas, porque me guiaba esta sabiduría; e ignoraba yo que ella fuese madre de todos estos bienes. and I rejoiced in all these, because this wisdom went before me, although I did not know that she is the mother of them all.13La aprendí sin ficción, y la comunico sin envidia, ni encubro su valor. This I have learned without falsehood and communicate without envy, and her integrity I do not hide.14Pues es un tesoro infinito para los hombres, que a cuantos se han valido de él, ha hecho partícipes de la amistad de Dios, y recomendables por los dones de la doctrina. Indeed, she is an infinite treasure chest for men, and those who make use of it, become partakers in the friendship of God, because they are recommended by the gifts of instruction.15A mí me ha concedido Dios el expresar lo que siento; y tener pensamientos dignos de los dones recibidos, porque Él es la guía de la sabiduría, y el que corrige a los sabios; Yet God has given to me to speak my mind, and to conceive thoughts worthy of those things that are given to me, because he is the leader of wisdom and the repairer of understanding.16puesto que estamos en sus manos nosotros, y nuestros discursos, y toda la sabiduría, y la ciencia del obrar, y la disciplina. For in his hand are both we, and our words, and all wisdom, and the works of science, and instruction.17Él me dio la verdadera ciencia de las cosas existentes; para que yo conozca la constitución del mundo, y las virtudes de los elementos, For he has given me true knowledge of these things which exist: so as to know the orderly arrangement of the world, and the powers of the elements,18el principio, fin y medio de los tiempos, las mudanzas de las estaciones, y las vicisitudes de los tiempos; the beginning and the end and the midpoint of the seasons, the characteristics of changing things, and the divisions of time,19el curso del año, y las posiciones de las estrellas; the courses of the years, and the orderly arrangement of the stars,20la naturaleza de los animales, y la bravura de las fieras; la violencia de los vientos, y las inclinaciones de los hombres; la variedad de las plantas, y las virtudes de las raíces. the natures of animals, and the rage of wild beasts, the force of winds, and the reasonings of men, the diversities of plants, and the benefits of roots,21Aprendí cuantas cosas hay ocultas, y nunca vistas; pues me instruyó la sabiduría que es el artífice de todas. and all such things as are hidden and unexpected, I have learned; for wisdom, the artisan of all things, taught me.22Porque en ella tiene su morada el espíritu de inteligencia, el cual es santo, único, multiforme, sutil, elocuente, ágil, inmaculado, infalible, suave, amante del bien, perspicaz, irresistible, benéfico, For in her is the spirit of understanding: holy, singular, manifold, subtle, perceptive, lively, chaste, reliable, gracious, loving, good, astute, who forbids nothing beneficial,23amador de los hombres, benigno, estable, constante, seguro. Lo puede todo, todo lo prevé, y abarca todos los espíritus; es inteligente, puro y sutil. humane, kind, steadfast, trustworthy, secure, having all virtue, watching for all things and grasping all things with a pure and most delicate understanding of spirit.24Pues la sabiduría es más ágil que todas las cosas que se mueven, y alcanza a todas partes, a causa de su pureza; For wisdom is more active than all active things, yet she reaches everywhere because of her purity.25siendo como es una exhalación de la virtud de Dios, o como una pura emanación, de la gloria de Dios omnipotente; por eso no tiene lugar en ella cosa manchada; For she is a breath of the virtue of God and a genuine emanation from the purity of the almighty God, and therefore nothing unclean can invade her.26como que es el resplandor de la luz eterna, un espejo sin mancilla de la majestad de Dios, y una imagen de su bondad. Indeed, she is the brightness of eternal light, and the unspotted mirror of the majesty of God, and the image of his goodness.27Con ser una sola lo puede todo, y siendo en sí inmutable todo lo renueva; se derrama por las naciones, entre las almas santas, formando amigos de Dios y profetas. And though she is one, she can do all things; and, unchanging in herself, she renews all things, and throughout the nations she conveys herself to holy souls, establishing them as friends and prophets of God.28Porque Dios solamente ama al que mora con la sabiduría, For God loves none but those who dwell with wisdom.29la cual es más hermosa que el sol, y sobrepuja a todo el orden de las estrellas, y si se la compara con la luz, le hace muchas ventajas; For she is more spectacular than the sun, and above the array of all the stars; compared with the light, she is found to be before it.30visto que a la luz la alcanza la noche; pero la malicia jamás prevalece contra la sabiduría. Indeed, after her comes night, but wisdom will not be overcome by malice.
