1En tres cosas se complace mi corazón, las cuales son de la aprobación de Dios y de los hombres: My spirit is pleased with three things; these are approved in the sight of God and men:2La concordia entre los hermanos, el amor entre los prójimos, y un marido y mujer bien unidos entre sí. the harmony of brothers, and the love of neighbors, and a husband and wife agreeing well together.3Tres especies de personas aborrece mi alma y su proceder me es sumamente enfadoso: My soul hates three kinds of things; and I am greatly distressed over their souls:4el pobre soberbio, el rico mentiroso, el viejo fatuo e imprudente. an arrogant pauper, a wealthy liar, a foolish and senseless elder.5Lo que no juntaste en tu juventud, ¿cómo lo has de hallar en tu vejez? The things that you have not obtained in your youth, how will you find them in your old age?6¡Oh qué bello adorno para las canas el saber juzgar, y para los ancianos el saber dar un consejo! How beautiful it is for a grey head to have judgment, and for elders to know counsel!7¡Cuán bien parece la sabiduría en las personas de edad avanzada! ¡Y en las que están en alto puesto la inteligencia y el consejo! How beautiful it is for those who are aged to have wisdom, and for those who are honored to have understanding and counsel!8Corona de los ancianos es la mucha experiencia, y la gloria de ellos el temor de Dios. Great experience is the crown of the aged, and the fear of God is their glory.9Nueve cosas raras he tenido yo en mucha estima en mi corazón; y la décima la anunciaré con mi lengua a los hombres. I have magnified nine things, overlooked by the heart; and a tenth, I will declare to men with my tongue:10Un hombre que halla consuelo en sus hijos, y uno que ya en vida ve la ruina de sus enemigos. a man who finds joy in his children, and one who lives to see the undoing of his enemies.11Dichoso el que vive con una mujer juiciosa, el que no se deslizó en su lengua, y el que no ha sido siervo de personas indignas de sí. Blessed is he who lives with a wise wife, and he who has not slipped with his tongue, and he who has not served those unworthy of himself.12Dichoso él que ha hallado un verdadero amigo; y aquel que explica la justicia a oídos que escuchan. Blessed is he who finds a true friend, and he who describes justice to an attentive ear.13¡Oh cuán grande es el que adquirió la sabiduría, y el que posee la ciencia! pero ninguno supera al que teme a Dios. How great is he who finds wisdom and knowledge! But there is no one above him who fears the Lord.14El temor de Dios se sobrepone a todas las cosas. The fear of God has set itself above all things.15Bienaventurado el hombre a quien es dado tener el temor de Dios. ¿Con quién compararemos al que le posee? Blessed is the man to whom it has been given to have the fear of God. He who holds to it, to whom can he be compared?16El temor de Dios es el principio de su amor; mas debe unírsele el principio de la fe. The fear of God is the beginning of his love; and the beginning of faith has been joined closely to the same.17La tristeza del corazón es la mayor plaga; y la suma malicia, la malignidad de la mujer. The sadness of the heart is every wound. And the wickedness of a wife is every malice.18Sufrirá uno cualquiera llaga, mas no la llaga del corazón; And a man will choose any wound, but the wound of the heart,19y cualquiera maldad, mas no la maldad de la mujer; and any wickedness, but the wickedness of a wife,20y toda aflicción, mas no la que viene de aquellos que odian; and any obstacle, but the obstacle of those who hate him,21y cualquier castigo, mas no el que viene de los enemigos. and any vindication, but the vindication of his enemies.22No hay cabeza peor que la cabeza de la culebra, There is no head worse than the head of a serpent,23ni hay ira peor que la ira de la mujer. Mejor habitar con un león, y con un dragón, que con una mujer malvada. and there is no anger above the anger of a wife. It would be more agreeable to abide with a lion or a dragon, than to live with a wicked wife.24La malignidad de la mujer la hace inmutar su semblante y poner tétrico aspecto, como el de un oso, y la presenta tal como un saco de luto. A wicked wife changes her face. And she darkens her countenance like a bear. And she displays it like sackcloth. In the midst of her neighbors,25Gime su marido en medio de sus vecinos, y oyéndolos suspira un poco. her husband groans, and hearing of this, he sighs a little.26Toda malicia es muy pequeña en comparación de la malicia de la mujer; caiga ella en suerte al pecador. All malice is brief compared to the malice of a wife. Let the fate of sinners fall upon her!27Lo que es para los pies de un viejo el subir un monte de arena, eso es para un hombre sosegado una mujer habladora. As climbing over sand is to the feet of the aged, so is a talkative wife to a quiet man.28No mires el buen parecer de la mujer, ni codicies a una mujer por su belleza. You should not favor a woman’s beauty, and you should not desire a wife for her beauty.29Grande es la ira de la mujer, y su desacato y su ignominia. The anger and disrespect and shame from a wife can be great.30Si la mujer tiene el mando, se rebela contra su marido. The wife, if she has primacy, is set against her husband.31La mujer de mala ralea aflige el ánimo, y abate el semblante, y llaga el corazón. A wicked wife debases the heart, and saddens the face, and wounds the heart.32La mujer que no da gusto a su marido, le descoyunta los brazos, y le debilita las rodillas. A wife who does not make her husband happy enfeebles the hands and weakens the knees.33De la mujer tuvo principio el pecado, y por causa de ella morimos todos. The beginning of sin came from a woman; and through her, we all die.34No dejes ni aun el menor agujero a tu agua, ni a la mujer mala le des licencia de salir fuera. You should not provide an exit to your water, not even a little; nor should you give permission for a wicked wife to exceed the limit.35Si ella no camina bajo tu dirección, te afrentará delante de tus enemigos. If she will not walk at your hand, she will confound you in the sight of your enemies.36Sepárala de tu lecho, porque no se burle siempre de ti. Tear her away from your body, lest she abuse you continually.
