Sabiduría 8
1Ella abarca fuertemente (todas las cosas), de un cabo a otro, y las ordena todas con suavidad. Thus, she reaches mightily from one end all the way to the other, and she orders all things sweetly.2A esta amé yo, y la busqué desde mi juventud, y procuré tomarla por esposa mía, y quedé enamorado de su hermosura. I have loved her and searched for her from my youth, and have asked to take her to me as my spouse, and I became a lover of her form.3Realza su nobleza la estrecha unión que tiene con Dios; y además la ama el Señor de todas las cosas; She glorifies her lineage by having companionship with God; yes and of all things, the Lord loves her.4siendo ella la maestra de la ciencia de Dios, y la directora de sus obras. For she teaches the teaching of God and is the chooser of his works.5Y si en esta vida se codician las riquezas, ¿qué cosa más rica que la sabiduría, creadora de todas las cosas? And if riches are longed for in life, what is richer than wisdom, which is being served in all things?6Si la industria es la que produce las obras, ¿quién mejor que la sabiduría mostró el arte en estas cosas existentes? But if the mind is to be served, who, of all that exists, is a greater artisan than she?7Si alguno ama la justicia, frutos son de los trabajos de esta las grandes virtudes, porque enseña la templanza, y la prudencia, y la justicia, y la fortaleza, que son las cosas más útiles a los hombres en esta vida. And if anyone loves justice, her labors hold great virtues; for she teaches temperance and prudence, justice and virtue, and nothing is more useful in human life.8Si alguno desea el mucho saber, ella es la que sabe lo pasado, y forma juicio de lo futuro; conoce los artificios de los discursos, y las soluciones de los argumentos; adivina los prodigios y maravillas antes, que sucedan, y los acontecimientos de los tiempos y de los siglos. And if one desires a multitude of knowledge, she knows the past and forecasts the future; she knows the subtleties of conversation and the response to arguments; she understands the signs and portents, before the events take place, events both of the present time and of future ages.9Propuse traérmela, para vivir en su compañía, sabiendo que comunicará conmigo sus bienes, y será el consuelo mío, en mis cuidados y penas. Therefore, I resolved to take her to me to live together, knowing that she will be a good counselor and will console my thoughts and my weariness.10Por ella seré ilustre entre las gentes; joven seré honrado de los ancianos. Because of her, I have clarity in the midst of confusion, and honor among the elders in my youth;11Me reconocerán por agudo en el juzgar, seré admirable a los ojos de los grandes, y los príncipes manifestarán en sus semblantes la admiración que les causo. and I will be found to be astute in judgment, and will be admired in the sight of the mighty, and the faces of leaders will wonder at me.12Si callo, estarán en expectación, y si hablo me escucharán atentos; y cuando me extendiere en mi discurso, pondrán el dedo en sus labios. When I am silent, they will wait for me; when I speak, they will respect me; and when I talk for too long, they will put their hands on their mouths.13Además de esto, por ella adquiriré la inmortalidad, y dejaré memoria eterna de mí a los venideros. Thus, by means of her, I will have immortality, and I will bequeath an everlasting memorial to those who come after me.14Gobernaré los pueblos, y se sujetarán a mí las naciones. I will set the peoples in order, and nations will be subject to me.15Temblarán los reyes feroces, al oír mi nombre; con el pueblo me mostraré benigno, y valiente en la guerra. Hearing me, terrible kings will be afraid; to the multitude, I will be seen as good and valiant in war.16Entrando en mi casa tendré con ella mi reposo, porque su conversación no tiene amargura, ni tedio su trato, sino consuelo y alegría. When I go into my house, I will repose myself with her, for her conversation has no bitterness, nor her company any tediousness, but only joy and gladness.17Considerando yo esto para conmigo, y revolviendo en mi corazón cómo en la unión con la sabiduría se halla la inmortalidad, Thinking these things within myself, and recalling in my heart that immortality is the intention of wisdom,18y un santo placer en su amistad, e inagotables tesoros en las obras de sus manos, y la prudencia en el ejercicio de conversar con ella, y grande gloria en participar de sus razonamientos, andaba por todas partes, buscando cómo apropiármela. and that in her friendship is good enjoyment, and in the works of her hands are honors without flaw, and in debate with her is understanding, and glory in sharing conversation with her; I went about seeking, so that I might take her to myself.19Ya de niño era yo de buen ingenio, y me cupo por suerte una buena alma. For I was an ingenious boy and had been dealt a good soul.20Creciendo en la bondad vine a un cuerpo incontaminado; Even more so, being good, I came to have an undefiled body.21y luego que llegué a entender que no podría ser continente, si Dios no me lo otorgaba —y era ya afecto de la sabiduría el saber de quién venía este don— acudí al Señor, a quien se lo pedí con fervor, diciendo de todo mi corazón: And since I know that it is not possible to be chaste except as a gift from God, and that it is a point of wisdom to know whose gift it is, I approached the Lord, and I besought him, and I said with my whole heart:
