Two places claim the name. Kafr Kanna, the one pilgrims visit, has an 1881 Franciscan church over remains of a synagogue and first-century houses. Khirbet Qana, a deserted hill some 9 km north, has an excavated first-century village and a medieval pilgrimage cave; recent scholarship leans towards it, while custom stays with the former.
